The Importance Of Stem Cells And Cord Blood Research PDF Print E-mail

Stem cell research is still a relatively new science, but already it is being use effectively in the treatment of many blood and immune-system related conditions. There have been several successful transplant operations where cord blood stem cells have been used by donor patients to treat and successfully cure many serious diseases and conditions.

Cord blood (or umbilical cord blood), which is removed from the placenta or umbilical cord of a newly born child, is being successfully stored by cord blood banking facilities as it is recognized in its utilization as a viable source of stem cells. Already, many public and non-profit cord blood storage facilities are at capacity, and so, private cord blood storing companies are appearing to help deal with the increased demand in this field.

While the true potential of cord blood and stem cells has not yet been fully realized, the United States government has determined the validity of this science and has committed over $250 million dollars to stem cell research, hoping that more cures and treatments will be found to deal with blood and immune-system related genetic diseases, cancers, and other serious conditions.
